BYRON

Byron lives and breathes the bush. Passionate about wildlife – especially reptiles – he is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge about animals and animal behaviour, animal husbandry, and general environmental know-how. Previously a field guide instructor, a game ranger, and a guide at some of the top lodges in South Africa, he has also worked as a priority species wildlife monitor throughout KwaZulu-Natal and in the Western Cape.

As if he didn’t have enough information in his cranium about the natural world, he is currently completing a degree in environmental management. He also has an uncanny ability to mimic all kinds of animal calls, especially birds.

JENN

Jenn is an American expat who traded one wilderness for another. After braving the concrete jungle of Los Angeles as a touring singer/songwriter and independent label owner, she came to the South African bush in search of a serious career change and a reconnection to the natural world.

Since moving to South Africa, she has worked as a priority species monitor, ran a field guide training camp, and rehabilitated cheetah, as well as wrote personal and professional development coaching guides and educational material for an e-learning company. She is also a professional writer and photographer, and her background (among other things) includes veterinary medicine, lodge management and business. We just call her ‘Renaissance Woman.’

On occasion Jenn will rally the volunteers and get a music night going. And if the volunteers are lucky, Byron might bust out some of his signature dance moves.

IAIN

Iain is the visionary, and basically the main reason this entire project (not to mention reserve) exists. A true ideas man with a lot of heart and a true love for the bush, Iain is always ready to get involved at 110% capacity. He often stops by to meet the volunteers, and is actively involved with the programme, the projects we work on, and the people we work with.

A man with conservation in his blood, Iain spent his first few years living on the farm in Stellenbosch, exploring every nook and cranny, and collecting whatever snakes he could find (much to his mother's chagrin). He never lost his passion for wildlife, and for protecting it.

He's a father, happily married, with a young son and another one on the way. He's also quite possibly the friendliest person you will ever meet. We're all pretty much convinced that the day you see Iain miserable is the day the world will end.

SINA

Sina is just plain awesome. She is the reason our camp is so neat and tidy, our food is so tasty, and our world is so organised. Basically, if it weren't for Sina, we might just fall apart.

Though her Afrikaans is excellent, she is still working on her English, so please be patient with her. And if you're keen, help her learn. She'll happily teach you some Afrikaans in return. And might make you an extra cookie.
