About the rhino

Like just about every other reserve with

rhino in South Africa, we have had our

rhino successes and tragedies. And

we're committed to make sure we

celebrate our successes and turn any

tragedies into opportunities. And it is one

such tragedy that spawned our newest

project:  the Fragile rhino initiative.

From Iain Buchanan: "Earlier this year we experienced a tragic event on our reserve – the poaching of a mother rhino heavily pregnant with a young male calf. Both mother and baby died in the trauma.

This event completely changed my life as well as the lives of the entire team on our game reserve in the Eastern Cape. We couldn’t help but see the parallel between the loss of life of this unborn baby with the feeling that we were all losing the war on poaching, and losing future generations of this iconic species as well. The message could not be more clearly represented by this unborn baby, only days from stepping into this world.

But what began as a tragedy has grown into a blinding light of hope, because out of the horror of the event came a powerful idea.

We decided on that day that our personal response to the event would be to make sure we created an opportunity for this rhino to be ‘born’, and it was - in a perfect replica immortalised in bronze. This new form would be indestructible but yet still emphasise the intense Fragility of this species' current state.

The result is Fragile rhino, our light at the end of a tunnel – if one can see such a light with the current downward spiral of this iconic species.

Through Fragile rhino, we seek to raise funds for anti-poaching by way of selling artwork that captures the current “fragile” state of this species. All funds will go into the much-needed anti-poaching efforts on the ground at Mount Camdeboo and other game reserves.

Please support our efforts and join us in launching the official website: visit us at www.fragilerhino.com. And share the Fragile story far and wide!"

While we actively monitor our rhino populations on the ground, we know not everyone can get to Africa. We want this new anti-poaching initiative to allow everyone to be a part of the fight to save this species.

As a volunteer with us, you will have the opportunity to get involved not only in ground efforts monitoring the rhino with MCCE, but also in fundraising efforts (if you are so inclined) to help with the Fragile rhino initiative. Please indicate on your application form if you are interested in being a part of Fragile rhino.
