BIG DIFFERENCE

The Mount Camdeboo Conservation Experience,

located in South Africa's malaria-free Eastern Cape,

is looking for a few good volunteers to join our dedicated team of conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts as we work to protect some of Africa's most endangered wildlife and wild places (and help local communities along the way).

We practice true conservation and ecotourism, and we welcome anyone who wants to join in our adventure. Whether you're a gap-year student, a researcher, a family, or simply someone looking for a life-changing experience, you can rest assured that the Mount Camdeboo Conservation Experience will provide ample opportunities to get your hands dirty, learn new skills, and make a positive impact on wildlife and community in this unique and stunning land, the

Great Karoo of South Africa.

Come and experience the adventure of a lifetime with our safari behind the safari.

The Story

About MCCE

We're a private, family-run reserve dedicated to protecting South Africa's natural treasures - our wildlife and our wild places - and sharing them with others. We do not get any funding from the government, so we have to rely on tourism in order to supplement our conservation and community-building efforts.

With rhino poaching at record levels, running a reserve has skyrocketed in costs. But we refuse to give up protecting not only rhino, but ALL of our wildlife. To help defray those costs (and to add more hands helping with the many projects we run both on and off the reserve), we decided to start up a conservation programme separate from the lodge, whereby people can volunteer their time to help us with our efforts.

We'll be perfectly honest – without volunteers, we can't do a lot of the meaningful work we do, particularly when it comes to anti-poaching. So we're turning to you for help.

The Team

A guide to your fearless leaders

Our team is made up of passionate people who never really stop working. But that's fine with them, because they love what they do, so to them it isn't really work. No joke - you will find them out at midnight looking for aardvark, and then up the next morning at 6am, checking camera traps and giddily looking through the previous night's footage of animals.

These guys are truly dedicated to the work they do. But don't let that intimidate you. They are also a lot of fun, and certainly don't miss an opportunity to kick back and relax with the volunteers. After all, activities like having sundowners around a fire is really an integral part of the South African way of life in the bush.

Our people are committed to making a difference, and they love to show off their beautiful part of the world with newcomers and repeat customers alike. They'll fill your head with all the knowledge they've picked up from years both in the classroom and in the field. And there's a lot of it! So don't be shy about asking questions.

Volunteers on hilltop at Mount Camdeboo Conservation volunteer and gap year Experience in Africa

The Experience

A day in the life

Volunteers are in many ways the lifeblood of conservation, the hands we so desperately need to help us keep our wild places wild and our species intact. Being a volunteer with us means being prepared for a variety of types of work, from animal tracking and research, to reserve management, to botanical rehabilitation, to community outreach. Each day is different.

Volunteers come in all ages and backgrounds. They hail from points all over the globe. Some are researchers working on their thesis. Some are students on a gap year. Some are looking for a career change. Some are looking for work experience. Some just want to give back. Some simply want to spend a few weeks in the bush getting their hands dirty and filling their lungs with fresh air. And some are fulfilling a dream to come to Africa. The unifying theme among them is an interest in using their time, skills and money to give back and make a positive impact.
